Sanders Has His Own Ice Cream. What About Hillary? . . .

Ben Cohen, who co-founded Ben & Jerry's, just created a special ice cream flavor for Bernie Sanders. It is called Bernie's Yearning. It is a pint of mint ice cream with a disc of solid chocolate on the top 1% of the container. People are supposed to break up the chocolate and mix it up with the ice cream that represents the 99% who are being exploited by the top 1%.

As usually, Hillary gets scooped by the competition. Still it is not too late to come up with her own personal ice cream flavor. Here is the recipe for Hilly Vanilly:

  • Start with really old vanilla ice cream.
  • Add a generous supply of expensive imported nuts.
  • Add some BS (butterscotch).
  • Home-churn it in Hillary's basement where she used to keep her email server. Make sure it is nice and fluffy so it is mostly air.
  • Comes with rainbow sprinkles (but only if packaged after 2013)
  • Warning: buyers needs to pay Bill Clinton later to give an expensive speech.
What else is missing?

Proof We're One Generation Away from Abandoning God the Creator

Last week the Washington Post reported that 0% of young Icelanders believe that God created the earth.

Twenty years ago 90% of Icelanders claimed to be religious believers. Now it is less than 50%. The believers are dying off and the youth are increasing atheists.

What changed?

The Post reported:

"Secularization [in Iceland] has occurred very quickly, especially among younger people," said Bjarni Jonsson, the managing director of the Icelandic Ethical Humanist Association, an atheist nongovernmental organization. "With increased education and broad-mindedness, change can occur quickly."

Young Icelanders have abandoned their religious heritage to embrace secularism due to "education" and "broad-mindedness".

Could it happen here?

Here in the United States, the secular left focuses on maintaining control of public schools so they can promote the same secular message. They fight like rabid dogs to prevent any teachings that would suggest the existence of Deity.

So much for "broad-mindedness."

So it is up to parents to lead the next generation to keep the faith. Fortunately, science is actually on the side of believers. For example, the secularists are careful to banish any criticism of Darwin and evolution, even though evolution is becoming increasingly impossible to support from the scientific facts.

To make this message more accessible to the general public, I wrote the play Inherit the Wind: Overturned by Design. (see link at upper right). This time, instead of basing the over-the-hill politician turned prosecutor on William Jennings Bryant, he looks a lot like Al Gore. Instead of Clarence Darrow, the feisty defense attorney is based on Ann Coulter. It's conservatives debating liberals, intelligent design vs evolution. It shares the message that intelligent design should be taken seriously, and not dismissed without any debate. My goal is to see this play help advance the intelligent design argument.

The trends are clear, the secular humanists have a goal of removing God from the lives of our youth.

Let's not let that happen.

Play the Date, Mate, Hate Game

When reading P.J. O'Rourke's book Don't Vote, It Just Encourages The Bastards I learned of a crass group game called F***, Marry, Kill. To play you take three people and assign them to each of these categories. Obviously the Kill category is for the person you could do without and the Marry category is the person you identify as who is best for you. The other category may be good for a fling, but nothing long term. O'Rourke decided to apply this game to political figures.

I prefer to restate the game in more genteel words, so I call it Date, Mate, Hate.

Here is where I would match up candidates in these categories:

Date - Ted Cruz

I am close to him philosophically, but I worry about his appeal. A conservative has never been elected president by trying to get conservatives alone to carry him over the line. Barry Goldwater flopped using this strategy. Reagan was smarter, his message attracted moderates and that is how he won. Many people don't know that in 1980 there were fewer conservatives than in 2012. People also are not aware that among conservatives Reagan got a smaller percentage of votes than Romney. Romney lost because more moderates preferred Obama, not because conservatives stay away. Look at the Roper data. Facts don't lie.

Don't get me wrong. I think Ted Cruz is brilliant. I just think the main stream media would paint him as a nut and that would throw the election to the Dems. I think Cruz is much better suited for the Supreme Court where he could protect the Constitution for decades.

Mate - Marco Rubio, John Kasich

Rubio got elected to the senate as a Tea Party rebel. Yes he tried to fix immigration to the disappointment of many conservatives, but take that away and he is solid as well as appealing. Rubio could attract votes that would not consider Cruz. Kasich also has some appeal in the Mate category. He has executive experience, he would carry Ohio which Republicans need to win, he is a budget hawk which is the most important topic that needs attention. When he was in congress in the late 1990's, he led the successful effort to balance the federal budget. I recognize that Rubio and Kasich are not as conservative as Cruz, but I can live with that if they have a much better chance of winning. We don't need a repeat of Goldwater 1964.

Hate - Donald Trump, Jeb Bush

While people who follow Cruz are making an emotional selection, I think people who follow Trump are just plain irrational. TRUMP IS NOT A CONSERVATIVE. He just plays one on TV. This man has so many faults, it's astonishing that he can be leading in the polls. I get that he says things that fire up those fed up with the status quo.

We don't elect a soundbite or an idea to be president. We elect a person.

Trump is thin-skinned, vindictive, intellectually lazy, irreligious, progressive, narcissistic, and unelectable.  Even the claim that Trump is a successful businessman is false. As I explained in a previous essay, Trump's wealth is much less than it would have been had he just used his dad's money to buy an indexed mutual fund.

As for JEB!, his brother was a big spending Republican. Instead of keeping up with the fiscal responsibility started by Kasich, George W. started us back on the road to unsustainable debt. JEB! gives no indication he would do any better. We have better choices that are more conservative.

P.S. Kudos to The National Review for dedicating a full issue to pointing out the obvious - Trump is no conservative.

Unlikeable: The Problem with Hillary

I recently read Unlikeable: The Problem with Hillary by Edward Klein. I can't say I enjoyed the book, because the behind-the-scenes vignettes about the Hillary the public doesn't see are stomach turning. If you are easily nauseous, take some Kaopectate, you're going to need it.  Then read the book.

As a long time east-coast writer for established left-wing publications, Klein has access to many of the people who run in the same circles as the Clintons. This book gives the behind-the-scenes anecdotes of how two-faced Hillary Clinton is. She is not the brilliant loving grandmother she would like people to believe. She is a mean-spirited, foul-mouthed, conniving, lying, narcissistic, unaccomplished, petty-minded, ill-tempered, greedy woman (plus a few other adjectives I left out). No wonder she is so unlikeable.

In a perfect world, voters would be required to read this book before voting.

This Major Church Just Rejected God the Creator

Americans have been used to decades of secularists fighting to deny the role of God in creation. It was a big deal in 1925 when John Scopes was put on trial for teaching evolution in school. It is even a bigger deal today.

Nowadays evolution is taught in every school and any attempt to suggest that God is the source of creation is squashed. It is impossible to debate that evolution is an inadequate explanation for the creation of the universe and life and that a better argument is that the universe and life are the results of a Designer.

This May the United Methodist Church (UMC) is holding its General Conference in Portland, Oregon. This 12.1 million member church has the theme "Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors." Now it appears that the "open minds" does not apply to a belief that God is the creator of the world. So much for Genesis 1, verse 1.

Incredibly, UMC has rejected the Discovery Institute's request to sponsor an information table at the conference. The Discovery Institute promotes the belief that God is responsible for the creation of life and the universe. Why would this result in being banned from a religious conference?

Unfortunately, UMC appears to have been hijacked by leftists who reject any opportunities for people to hear about the "controversial" position that God is the creator! It is sad to see that secularists are now even taking over religious organizations too.

I'm used to seeing this position from institutions such as the media and schools which have been taken over by secularists for many years. That is why I wrote my play Inherit the Wind: Overturned by Design.

Now it is clear there is no way UMC would ever host such an event at their General Conference.

The play is available for Nook, IBook on ITunes, or Amazon.

18 Trillion Things Left Out of State of Union Speech

Conservatives has had no love for Obama since the start of his presidency, but his failures, obvious to his critics, will be recognized by historians as they write the sad story of his wasteful presidency.

In yesterdays state of the union address, President Obama completely failed to mention the biggest legacy of his presidency - the $18 trillion debt. Twenty years ago, another Democrat Democrat Bill Clinton was forced by the Republican congress to balance the budget. For a couple of years the federal government actually spent less than it collected in taxes.

Then George Bush abandoned fiscal discipline and added nearly $6 trillion to the national debt. Obama promised to restore fiscal discipline when running for president, but once in office he completely ignored his Simpson-Bowles Commission and did absolutely nothing to address the problem, becoming the President to oversee the greatest increase of national debt in history. By the time he leaves office his bill to the country will be almost $7 trillion. That's about $70,000 per household.

What did your family get for your $70,000 share of more debt?

Presidents are supposed to do hard things. Southerner Harry Truman desegregated the military. Liberal Democrat John Kennedy lowered tax rates. Anti-communist Richard Nixon opened Communist China.

Obama couldn't step up and do the right thing.

America needed a big spending liberal like Obama to bring government spending under control. He could have done it with happy support from Republicans, but Obama is a small minded ideologue and America will suffer for his inaction for years.

4 of a Kind Reasons Lotteries are Bad

The news is announcing the next Powerball jackpot will award prizes over $1 billion. There will be one or more big winners, but for everyone else, lotteries are for losers. And if past winners are any indication, new winners may yet end up in the poorhouse.

In fact, when it comes to lotteries, everyone is a loser.

Stupid Fact One - You're Odds of Winning Are Less Than in Vegas

In Vegas you will see casinos advertise that they payout 97 percent on slots, meaning for every dollar bet by the public, the casino keeps 3 cents and returns 97 cents in prizes to winners. With government lotteries you are most likely only seeing 50 percent used for prizes. The government keeps the rest, plus it taxes your winnings. For a big prize that may only be 50 cents on the dollar with the rest going for taxes.

Stupid Fact Two - Lotteries Don't Provide More Revenue to State Projects

Some people who won't gamble in Vegas are okay with spending money on lottery tickets because the money "goes to a good cause".

Not really.

Wherever lottery revenue is used for schools or parks or some other popular government program, state legislatures have long figured out that if their state lottery is a source of revenue, they can cut funding from regular tax sources. So lotteries don't really bring in more money for these favorite programs.

Stupid Fact Three - Lotteries Are A Lousy Investment

Except for social security payments that workers are forced to pay, many Americans set nothing aside for retirement, and yet millions of Americans spend $30 or more each month on lottery tickets. If they win big (and don't lose their ticket) they are set for retirement, so they think.

Remember, the government is only giving back 50 percent in prizes so in order to have any chance of winning you have to play a lot, but even if you win, you don't win much.  Walter Hickey, with The Business Insider, reports that to have a 99 percent chance of winning the lotto you have to buy 145 $2 tickets. The most common prize is $4. Do the math, who wants to spend $290 to win $4?

Stupid.

Plus, even if you win a big prize, guess what? Remember, the government could take up to 50% in taxes.

What would happen if you took that same $30 per month wasted on lottery tickets and invested it in a Roth IRA mutual fund from age 18 to age 67. That's a total of $18,000 invested over 50 years. Based on past stock market history, it is very possible that your investment could grow at an average 8% per year and you would have around $250,000, tax free. If you managed to earn an average 10%, you would have around $500,000, tax free. And if you managed to earn an average 12%, you would have around $1,000,000, tax free.

Weigh the difference -- the potential winnings from buying 9,000 $2 lottery tickets or $250,000 to $1,000,000?

Stupid Fact Four - Lottery Winners Lose it All

You may or may not be surprised to learn that over 70% of big lottery prize winners go bankrupt.  The type of people who think lotteries are a smart investment are not likely to all of a sudden smarten up when they become millionaires. The lives of many past lottery winners read like a tabloid -- divorces, affairs, scandals, court fights, even murders. It turns out the same skills it takes to Get Rich Quick are the ones to Get Poor Quick.

Repeat after me -- Lotteries are for losers.
