The Speech Where Reagan Predicted the Future

Interesting warning from then Governor Ronald Reagan.

“… Rome had known a pioneer beginning not unlike our own pioneer heritage, and then entered into two centuries of greatness, reaching its pinnacle in the second of those centuries, going into the decline and collapse in the third. Yet, the sins of decay were becoming apparent in the latter years of that second century.

“It is written that there were vast increases in the number of the idle rich, and the idle poor. The latter (the idle poor) were put on a permanent dole, a welfare system not unlike our own. As this system became permanent, the recipients of public largesse (welfare) increased in number. They organized into a political block with sizable power. They were not hesitant about making their demands known. Nor was the government hesitant about agreeing to their demands … and with ever-increasing frequency. Would-be emperors catered to them. The great, solid middle class—Rome’s strength then as ours is today—was taxed more and more to support a bureaucracy that kept growing larger, and even more powerful. Surtaxes were imposed upon incomes to meet emergencies. The government engaged in deficit spending. The denarius, a silver coin similar to our half dollar, began to lose its silvery hue. It took on a copper color as the government reduced the silver content.

“Even then, Gresham’s law was at work, because the real silver coin soon disappeared. It went into hiding.

“Military service was an obligation highly honored by the Romans. Indeed, a foreigner could win Roman citizenship simply by volunteering for service in the legions of Rome. But, with increasing affluence and opulence, the young men of Rome began avoiding this service, finding excuses to remain in the soft and sordid life of the city. They took to using cosmetics and wearing feminine-like hairdo’s and garments, until it became difficult, the historians tell us, to tell the sexes apart.

“Among the teachers and scholars was a group called the Cynics whose number let their hair and beards grow, and who wore slovenly clothes, and professed indifference to worldly goods as they heaped scorn on what they called ‘middle class values.’

“The morals declined. It became unsafe to walk in the countryside or the city streets. Rioting was commonplace and sometimes whole sections of towns and cities were burned.

“And, all the time, the twin diseases of confiscatory taxation and creeping inflation were waiting to deliver the death blow.

“Then finally, all these forces overcame the energy and ambition of the middle class.

“Rome fell.

“We are now approaching the end of our second century.” (Address by Governor Ronald Reagan of California at Eisenhower College, New York, 1969.)

Why Wilder Quit Hollywood

With the death of beloved film star Gene Wilder, it is befitting we acknowledge the reason we saw less of him for the past 20 years. Wilder did not think the excessive bad language that is the staple of too many movies was necessary.

I think most people would agree with him.  How many people come out of a movie without excessive swearing and say, "You know, I kind of liked that movie, but it would have been much better with more foul language"? I don't think anyone would think that way.

Wilder was no angel based on some of the movies he made (such as Blazing Saddles), but at least he had the courage to draw the line somewhere.

Thankfully, there is a solution to keep unwelcome language and other objections out of our homes when we want to watch movies. See my recent post on Batman's Butt to find out more.

Palmer & Kaepernick: The Legend & The Loser

The world lost a legend with the recent passing of Arnold Palmer. Is there any greater contrast between the class and grace of Arnold Palmer and the crass and disgrace of Colin Kaepernick?
Even after Palmer was past his prime he continued to be a beloved ambassador of the sport of golf and he remained humble and grateful that his talents were recognized and rewarded by the country that he loved. By contrast, now that Kaepernick is past his prime, he has chosen to support a misguided movement that focuses the blame on police when the actual cause of violence in black communities is due to the breakdown of marriage and the lack of responsible fathers serving as law abiding role models.

Colin Kaepernick recently dishonored the National Anthem by failing to stand while it was played. This action was to point out ill treatment of blacks in America. Kaepernick is proving to be as poor a thinker off the field as on the field.

Kapernick is a multi-millionaire surrounded by hundreds of other black NFL millionaires. He was adopted and raised by white parents. Can anyone name another nation where blacks have more opportunities to succeed than America? Racism is a minor issue in 2016.

If America is so bad for blacks, why have more blacks immigrated to the United States than were ever brought here as slaves?

The sad facts are that actions like Kaepernick's take the focus away from the root problems that are the source of the terrible conditions among many black people. The real thing Kaepernick and others should focus on is the dissolution of families in black America. Black babies are aborted in higher rates than any other race. Black men wouldn't become responsible fathers by marrying the mothers of their children. Black teens turn to gangs to meet their needs because of their broken homes. Black drug abuse is rampant, which can also be traced to broken homes. The Black Lives Matter movement complaining about the abuses of police, ignores the much greater problem of black on black violence. The crisis is rooted in failure in the home. Black kids raised by married parents, such as Kaepernick, don't have anywhere near the risk for problems as those who suffer from uncommitted or missing parents.

In all likelihood, Kaepernick will soon be history since his one promising career has floundered.

Too bad there are not more NFL heroes like Pat Tillman who quit the NFL after 9/11 to join the U.S. Army Rangers. He was sadly killed in action in Afghanistan.

Kaepernick is a Zero. Tillman is a Hero.

Obamacare to Blame for EpiPen Price Gouging

The drug maker Mylan is being rightly excoriated for it's unconscionable price increases of EpiPens. What is not getting the attention it should is that Mylan was able to get away with it because of Obamacare.

As you can see from the following graph, most of the increases have happened after Obamacare was passed in March 2010.

Epipens in Canada can still be purchased for about $100, instead of $600+ as in the United States. There is no reason for the higher price except that Mylan can legal get away with it.

Back when the details of Obamacare were being debated some reformers saw the potential for abuse and wanted to include rules that would keep this from happening. Such reforms were doomed because a key supporter that Obama co-oped to back up his health care expansion was Big Pharma. Big Pharma supported Obamacare because it knew things like this would be possible. Despite Obama's promises that his program would save every household $2,500 a year, the medical industry knew this was a lie. Obamacare was merely a big government expansion of a broken, wasteful system to provided more overpriced services to more people.

Here is one example of one sweet deal Big Pharma got in Obamacare. At one point Obamacare was going to be structured to favor generic drugs. However, in the final version, Big Pharma was able to get co-pay free drugs approved, a feature Mylan exploits. This means that Mylan's more expensive EpiPen drug can be picked without a co-pay - no upfront cost to the customer, but higher costs overall on the back end that the consumer doesn't see but results in increased premiums for everyone. However, many people have picked healthcare plans where they pay the first few thousand dollars out of pocket before reaching their deductible, so Mylan's trick is now out in the open.

How bad did Obamacare blow its chance to fix health care? Here is a quote from Confidence Men, by liberal author Ron Suskind where he talks about Dartmouth Method reformer Dr. Jim Weinstein, whose research had found widespread waste and unnecessary procedures throughout the health care industry and was hopeful that ObamaCare would address these obvious problems. However, special interests like Mylan squelched any chance at these much needed reforms.

To spend a ¨once-in-a-generation¨ effort on extending coverage to the uninsured--without any real teeth in using evidence about what was effective in reducing unnecessary procedures, and driving down costs--was a ¨stunning error.¨

¨It made things worse,¨ he said solemnly.

And then he got frustrated. ¨I can´t believe how wrong they got it. This was our one chance, and we completely blew it.¨

The moral to the story is if you leave it up to Big Government, you are setting yourself up to be taken advantage of by special interests who buy off legislators. Obamacare is a failure that has only made things worse.

NBA Transgender Hypocrisy

Recently the NBA announced that it is removing the 2017 NBA All Star Game from the scheduled appearance in Charlotte, North Carolina. It was a move made in concert with the LGBT Gestapo that was upset over the 2016 North Carolina law that ruled that men should use the men's showers and women should use the women's showers.

The NBA is acting hypocritically. It has not pulled out of future games in locations like China that is much more anti-LGBT than anything in the USA.

Also, the NBA has made no moves to encourage transgender athletes to play for the WNBA.  Why not? If a man should be able to use the women's showers in North Carolina, why can't he play for the WNBA and shower with his WNBA teammates?

Intelligent Design v Evolution Memes

Memes are part of the linga franca of social media, so I've decided to create some memes from some of my favorite quotes related to intelligent design. I will add them over time to this blog post.

11/2

9/21/16
I am confused why so many people who reject Intelligent Design are so eager to accept The Multiverse which is just as woo-woo if not more so.

9/9/16
Is Dyson's statement more acceptable to ID adherents or the evolution faithful?

8/16/16

My greater than normal interest in intelligent design dates back to 2006 when a bill that would have allowed schools to discuss intelligent design was shot down by the state school board. This wasn't in Vermont or New York -- this was in conservative Utah. I wrote a challenging letter that was published in the local paper. Around that time I watched the classic Spencer Tracy movie Inherit the Wind, a fictionalized account of the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial. I realized that one century later ID is now in the place evolution was 90 years ago. If you tried to teach ID in school, you could get arrested. I updated the script with mirror characters, even using some of the same dialogue from the actual Scopes trial. It is called Inherit the Wind: Overturned by Design. It was a fun writing project and I think it presents the ID argument to people in an entertaining way.  If you are interested, see the link on the right.

Major Difference Between Trump and Clinton...

Happy Halloween!

Anyone else notice this difference?

After watching the VP debate, we can see why Hillary picked Tim Kaine: Unlikable and Unlikable 2.

Who matches up best with Hillary from the Harry Potter world?

Marc Thiessen pointed out an interesting fact in a recent Washington Post opinion piece. Turns out more people in America believe in Bigfoot than believe that Hillary Clinton is honest and trustworthy.

Hillary Clinton was caught on video having a neurological event so she had to spin the media on why. Turns out she had pneumonia and it was made worse because she doesn't like to drink water. I wonder why?

The internet is rampant with claims that Hillary is using a double to help hide her medical problems. Just who could this double be?

Is there any reason why you destroy cell phones if not to keep others from see what is on them? Old phones should have been turned over to the State Department to dispose of, but when has Hillary Clinton ever followed the rules everyone else has to?

I was going to create a meme about this, but then I found one I had not seen before that already covered what I wanted to point out.
https://ifunny.co/tags/TwoFace/1467473162

Enjoy these original Hillary memes . . .
Nice company.

In a famous scene from the movie Casablanca, Claude Rains' character expresses faux shock that there is gambling going on in Rick's bar. What would he say about the Associated Press report that Hillary Clinton was granting easy State Department Access to foreign donors to the Clinton Foundation?

So, after lying about a phony night attack on Americans in a foreign country, Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte looses his endorsement deals with Airweave, Gentle Hair Removal, Speedo, and Ralph Lauren. Meanwhile, after lying about a real night attack on Americans (that actually killed people) in a foreign country, congenital liar Hillary Clinton keeps her endorsements and is a favorite to win the presidency. As Trump likes to say, "The system is rigged!"

Those who can't bring themselves to vote for Trump see it this way:

This one needs no further explanation. As Donald Trump would say, "Sad."

Batman's Butt - Hollywood vs Your Family

Last year a new online company VidAngel began selling movies and TV shows online via streaming that would allow their owners to mute objectionable language or skip over objectionable scenes.

Many a family has gone to the movies and afterwards someone says, "I liked the show, but I wish the language wasn't as bad." or "That was a pretty good movie, except for that one scene." VidAngel makes it possible for people to now watch a version of their movie in their own home without the parts they don't want.

VidAngel's business model is simple. They sell you the movie you want to watch for $20. You can then set filters to mute or skip the stuff you don't want. You can keep the movie in your library, or you can sell it back for $19 within 24 hours. It's a win-win-win. Hollywood sells a copy of their movie, VidAngel adds value by providing editing services, and the viewer gets to see the movie he/she wants.

Only it is not a win-win-win, because Hollywood doesn't like the arrangement.

In June, Disney, Warner Brothers, and other studios threatened legal action against VidAngel for copyright infringement.

The chargers are ludicrous.

VidAngel's actions are completely in line with the 2005 Family Movie Act. This act gives editing services the green light for ‘making imperceptible (i.e., filtering)… of limited portions of audio or video… transmitted [e.g., streamed] to [a] household for private viewing, from an authorized copy of the motion picture.’ It does not violate the Copyright Act.

The real reason for the Hollywood challenge is that the liberal studios don't want families deciding for themselves what they want to watch in their own homes. They want you to listen to bad language that you would not allow a guest to use in your home. They want you to see violence that you would not allow in your home. They want you to see people in various states of undress that you would not allow in your home.

That's just wrong.

If people follow the rules in your home and behave to your standards, then they are welcome. VidAngel makes it possible for more people to see Hollywood movies and TV shows. VidAngel's customers are people who would not watch the movies in their original form. Hollywood makes more money when this happens, but they are against it.

Note that Hollywood is not opposed to editing movies when they are shown on network TV or airlines. They make money from these cleaner versions. However, for years Hollywood has refused to sell these clean versions to families that don't want to see rated R or rated PG13 material.  Now VidAngel is filling the gap and Hollywood is whining about it.

The liberal left is not opposed to censoring. Notice how they ban conservatives from college campuses. There is even a version of Huckleberry Finn with all usage of the n-word removed.

The liberal left is also not opposed to making films even less family friendly by released DVDs that have a stricter rating or are unrated so they can include scenes not in the original movie.  Batman V Superman is a recent example. There is a new DVD version that comes with more violence and a quick peek at Ben Afleck's butt in the shower. It also adds many scenes with Superman that were left out of the theater version.

What if you want to see the extra scenes with Superman, but could do without Batman's butt seared into your brain?  With VidAngel it is possible.

Let's hope Hollywood's crazy challenge gets thrown out of court. Everyone should be able to decide what they want to watch in the privacy of their own homes with movies they own.

One more thing: VidAngel also allows owners to edit out Jar Jar Binks.  Brilliant! It is now possible to watch the Star Wars movies without ever seeing Jar Jar.
